Acai bowls are as trendy as avacado toast, macha lattes, and whipped coffee. This superfood makes for an excellent breakfast, snack, or dessert. The texture of this acai bowl is similar to a sorbet or soft serve ice cream! It’s truly delicious and if you have a sweet tooth like I do, this dish will not disappoint. The natural sugars of all the berries and fruits make the bowl so refreshing. That being said, be sure to check the label on the acai powder that you purchase to make sure there are no added sugars. You can also purchase frozen pureed acai at your local grocery store. As the weather gets warmer and more fresh fruit is in the stores, this is more and more desirable.
Pronounced A-sigh-ee, acai is a berry which resembles a grape or a blueberry. These berries grow on acai palm trees in rainforests in Central America and have now grown to be one of Americas superfoods. From the chocolate covered acai berries that everyone loves to Instagramable breakfast bowls, this little berry has certainly grown popularity. These berries are said to have more antioxidants and health benefits than the almighty blueberry. The dark purple color of acai means they are filled with polyphenols and anthocyanins which are also found in beets and blackberries. In addition, they are loaded with vitamins and minerals.
How to Make a Berry Acai Bowl
It’s really simple actually! The goal is to have the bowl as creamy and cold as possible, therefore ensure you’re using frozen, not fresh fruits. As I mentioned above, the acai can be purchased as a frozen puree as well. When using frozen acai, I suggest using only 1 cup of frozen fruit. I personally use the powder which requires a bit extra frozen fruit for the right consistency. For an even creamier consistency, add a yogurt. Make sure to use a high powdered blender like the Vitamix or Ninja. Be creative with the toppings! The toppings can make these bowls so pretty. Anything from coconut flakes, to nut butter or seeds will do.
- 2 cups frozen mixed berries
- 1 cup oat milk
- 1 frozen banana
- 2 TBSP acai powder
- 1/4 cup vanilla protein powder
- Fresh berries
- Chia seeds
- Pumpkin seeds
- In a blender, add all the ingredients and blend until creamy texture is met
- Spoon into a serving bowl and add desired toppings
